Infertility Investigations

The Marlow Clinic offers a range of 'low-tech' investigations for infertility. You may wish to evaluate your current Fertility status, have been recommended to have tests by your Practitioner - such as Acupuncturist, Nutritionist or Reflexologist - or be concerned about your family history or medical past.

We offer

  • Ovulation assessment £95

  • Assessment of hormonal changes in your cycle

Using Ultrasound and Blood tests we can give you an assessment of your current Fertility status.

Ultrasound can be used in 3 ways: Cycle monitoring and Ovulation asessment and Antral Follicle count(egg reserve).

  • Cycle monitoring is between 3 to 5 scans performed in one of your menstrual cycles. This allows a full picture of the changes to the ovaries and endometrium (lining of the womb). Normally in your menstrual cycle, one ovary will develop a Follicle which will grow larger until mid-cycle, when the follicle 'pops' and the egg is released. The egg itself cannot be seen by Ultrasound but the developing follicle can. In nearly all women, the follicle reaches an optimum size - usually 20 mm and then ovulation occurs. At the same time as assessing the developing follicle, ultrasound can assess the changes to the endometrium. The endometrium needs to thicken sufficiently to allow implantation of the fertilised egg. After ovulation, a further scan is done - about 7 days later, and the changes to the ovary and lining confirmed.

In some patients where cycles are irregular or ovulation kits are not indicating ovulation, cycle monitoring by ultrasound is invalauble.

  • If your cycles are regular- on occasion - a single scan at ovulation which depends on your cycle length can be used. But this is only suitable for patients who have already had other tests. This is because it can be difficult to accurately interpret a single scan finding.

  • Using Ultrasound, the numbers of Antral follicles can be counted and together with blood tests will indicate if you have any follicles, if the ovaries have reduced numbers of follicles or if your ovaries appear Menopausal. The Antral follicles are visible on Ultrasound and these areas contain your eggs.

Blood Tests can give accurate information about your hormonal changes in your Menstrual cycle and your overall egg reserve.

Depending on the individual and the requirement, we can undertake the following blood tests: AMH (Anti Mullerian Hormone), FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) LH (Luteinising Hormone) and Progesterone levels.

As a patient, you can self refer for your tests, come with a referral from your Doctor or Practitioner or we can refer you to a Private Gynaecologist or a private Women's Health specialist GP.
